Background on the 2017 Hyundai IONIQ Electric

200km on a charge, it's Hyundai's first all-electric vehicle

Gone are the days when Hyundai tried to improve perception of its brand by echoing the aesthetics of German and Japanese automakers: Hyundai wants to be perceived as a technology innovator.

With the IONIQ, Hyundai has a single compact model with 3 very modern, low-emission, environmentally-sensitive variants:

IONIQ hybrid
Combines a 1.6L gasoline engine and a 32kW electric motor giving a claimed 139 horsepower, and fuel economy in the 4.1L/100km and 1,000km per fillup range. Extrapolating from US prices quoted on the Internet, this model should start at around $28,000, ranging upwards, depending on options.

IONIQ electric
An 88kW electric motor powered by a Lithium Ion Polymer battery with a claimed 200km range per charge. Extrapolating from the US pricing, this model should start at around $40,000, but the actual price out the door will be less, given the generous incentives offered by the Ontario Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (EVIP). IONIQ electric plus
Basically the hybrid plus a larger Lithium Ion Polymer batter for 40km of electric-only capability. Ostensibly, could probably be name hybrid plus, but it's called what it's called. This model will appear in late 2017.

Because there are 3 headrests and 3 seat belts in the rear seating area, there is the potential for an additional $1,000 incentive.

Currently, pricing is not available on the web site
